It’s the time of year to be clearing out bird nest boxes, otherwise they can harbour parasites. Birds are already starting to investigate potential sites so start planning where to put up new boxes. Robin nest boxes with the larger, triangular entrance need to be less than two metres from the ground in dense vegetation to protect from predators. Merley Nature Group members have been cleaning the nest boxes around Merley (Selkirk play park, Merley Community Centre, Sopwith Meadows and Chichester Walk greenspace). Plans are afoot for planting more native trees. We find that taking positive action for our wildlife can help us cope with the worries from the news and with all the local house building.
